A genuine "Biedermeier" or Empire period sofa or day bed was hand crafted in Austria about 1835 and has locking jewelry boxes in both arms. Golden mahogany is inlaid with classical marquetry banding and designs in birch and walnut.
The glossy old finish is in very fine condition with warm antique patina and just enough mars and wear for antique patina. The frame is strong and tight with hand cut dovetail joinery visible on the backside. This is a very usable and elegant piece, comfortable for the era and newly upholstered. This historic European furniture was intended for a grand entry hall, with easy access to jewelry on your way in or out.
Dimensions are 73 1/2" long, 28" deep, 40" tall and the seat is 20" high.
