English 1790 Antique Georgian Tall or Long Case Grandfather Clock

Hand crafted about 1790 during the Georgian period in England, this tall or long case grandfather clock has a one day movement. The case is oak and mahogany with rosewood and inlaid ebony banding and an original bone escutcheon on the door lock.

The old finish has wonderful warm patina with just enough mars and shrinkage separations from age for antique character, see photos. Feet are rebuilt.

The brass movement keeps excellent time and strikes the hour on a bell. Professionally cleaned and oiled, a daily winding is by pulling the chain. A single iron weight and pendulum plus engraved brass hands all appear original.

The original hand painted iron dial depicts rural sheep, cows and a castle in ruins. Signed by the maker, "Broadheld of Belper," the ancient town is northwest of Nottingham in Derbyshire. A center of coal and iron works in the 1300, the city became a water powered cotton mill town in the 1700's.

Measurements of this classical historic clock are 22" wide, 10" deep and 7' 5" tall.

This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
