This early 1800's "Bonnetiere" is a one-door armoire intended for hats, from an age when both men and women regarded hats as an essential part of a wardrobe.
This lovely antique was hand-carved of solid oak in the province of Normandy, and was used for the traditional tall hats of the region.
A Bonnetiere was a luxury item, few people were affluent enough to have this many hats. The old finish has been polished to a satiny sheen, there is wonderful warm patina and lots of character - mars, knots, and separations, see photos.
Hand-wrought lift-off iron hinges are original. All panels are raised, hand-carved wooden pegs secure the joints. The older lock is operational, but not original.
Measurements of this charming historic French furniture are 28" wide, 19" deep and 6' 3" tall.
