Wonderfully hand carved in the Brittany folk tradition, this armoire or dowry cabinet is solid chestnut with panels of traditional scenes from village life. Vintage furniture from about 60 years ago, the original finish is superb. Inside are adjustable shelves with a drawer, and the lower drawers have hand-cut dovetails.
Brittany or Bretagne is a maritime province of northwest France. Formerly a separate country, the "Breton" language is still spoken. Famous for their cultural traditions and distinctive dress, the local hand-carved furniture has outstanding workmanship, using native local hardwoods with picturesque traditional motifs.
The finish is excellent on this heirloom furniture, which traditionally descended with the daughters of a family, as part of their dowry. Note a few glue joint separations from age shrinkage, see photos. Measurements are 4'8" wide, 23" deep and 6'10" tall.
