Adorned with fruit and flowers, this statue of "Fruits D'Automne," or Fruits of Autumn dates from about 1900, is signed by famous French sculptor, "Auguste Moreau."
The lovely naturalistic figure is beautifully draped and without damage. An original warm deep bronze finish is in very fine condition on cast "spelter" metal, an alloy of white metal similar to pewter.
A signature is embossed into the base of the sculpture itself. The engraved plate reads "Pat. Aug. Moreau, Medaille D'Or," or Gold Medal Winner at an International Exposition. August Louis Mathurin Moreau (1834-1917) was one of the best known artists of the celebrated Moreau family of sculptors. He worked in Paris from 1861- 1910 during the Art Nouveau period.
The etched glass candleholder is attached but probably not original, and there is a hole in the back at the bottom, suggesting that it may have once been wired as a newel post lamp. The original "rouge" or red marble base has minor chips.
Dimensions of this serene work of art are 12" diameter at the marble base and 36 1/2" tall overall.
