This spectacular hand wrought iron strongbox, safe or treasure chest was crafted in Germany in the 1700's.
The incredibly intricate locking system works with a giant key. Hand engraved in the manner of armor, the complex spring loaded mechanism still works seven individual latches simultaneously. Inside is another small compartment with a spring latch. There are engraved gold plated bosses on the mechanism.
A wrought arm supports the heavy lid when open. On the outside are double hasps for extra padlocks, if desired. Every surface shows filing and pounding by hand. The old black finish has nice patina. We have never seen such an example of these outside of a museum. Measurements of this remarkable European heavy antique box are 29" long, 15" deep and 14" tall.
