Herschede was the Rolls Royce of American tall case or grandfather clocks, and this is a wonderful example. The chime is played on 9 tubes, and the mahogany case is in excellent condition. The gold-plated filigree on the burnished dial is characteristic.
There are levers for silent/strike, silent/chime and the choice of familiar Westminster, Whittington or Canterbury melodies, which are strong and resonant on the nickel tubes. Brass pendulum and 3 weights are original to the 8 day movement. All glass in the case is beveled, there are tapered and fluted columns in solid mahogany. Probably dating from the 1920's, this is classic antique furniture. The movement and original crank are signed, and there is a Herschede crown insignia on the dial.
Measurements of this imposing clock are 23" wide, 15" deep and 6'8" tall.
