A "Cassone" or large marriage chest used as a bench was the most important family piece of furniture in an Italian "palazzo" or family palace. Rich and prestigious trophy furniture, this coffer, trunk or armor chest was filled with family treasures as the bride's dowry gift.
It would have been presented to a bride at her wedding, as an heirloom from her parents. Dating from the late 1800's, this spectacular Cassone is a real treasure.
Entirely hand carved of solid walnut and resting on bun feet. Classical acanthus leaf motifs and angels are artistic.
The original finish has marvelous antique patina and just enough mars and wear for character.
Hand wrought iron handles and hinges are fascinating. This design is characteristic of the Florence area of Tuscany.
Measurements of this grand and historic "Cassone" or bench are 67" long, 23" deep and 25" tall.
