Hand carved of solid walnut in the early 1700's, this wonderful Italian "Cassone" was also called an armor or dowry chest. There are high relief lion heads and scrolled feet.
A Cassone was the finest piece in a home, this heirloom is from the Tuscany area. Every surface is hand hewn and has planing marks. The old finish has been polished and has beautiful antique patina and lots of character - the wormy walnut has various repairs and replacements over the centuries, including the interior floor and hinges. No lock survives.
The top includes a burl plank over 19" wide. Dimensions of this grand and historic furniture are 54" long, 23" deep and 24" tall.
