Mid 1800's Hanging or Standing Ship's Whale Oil Lamp
A cast iron lamp from the mid 1800's has a hook that can hang, be pounded into wood or mineshaft wall, or stand on a table.
These lamps when hung could self level on a rolling ship. This simple antique light would have burned whale oil, but could probably manage a smokey flame with almost any grease or oil. A thumbscrew on top opens a filling hole, the iron has a natural aged patina.
The font is almost 3" diameter and the hook is about a foot long.
