A historic Georgian tall case or grandfather clock from around 1770 is signed "William Mordan, Nottingham," England.
The brass 8 day movement has been professionally cleaned and adjusted and keeps excellent time and strikes the hour, the lunar dial usually works but the calendar dial does not.
The original hand painted lunar dial depicts lunar "faces," a sailing ship and ruins around Nottingham. Richly embossed corner mounts have faces. The solid brass dial is richly hand engraved and embossed.
Solid mahogany accented with oak, the case has a very fine finish with a few mars and shrinkage separations from age. The door has a working lock and key plus a slight warp, see photos. Hand cut nails are visible, and there are some later repairs as would be expected.
Watch and clock maker William Mordan's dates are uncertain, he was baptized in 1737, apprenticed in the 1750's, married in 1758 and worked until around 1780.
Founded about 600 A.D., the northeast England city of Nottingham is most famous because of its sheriff and Robin Hood.
This classically proportioned antique clock measures 18" wide, 10" deep and 7' 3" tall.
