Iron bindings and the large lock are original on this solid oak strongbox or safe for money and papers, dated "1779" with iron numerals. Each side is a single plank of oak with stains and shrinkage separations from age. Inside is a compartment with lift lid for valuables.
The straps and hinges are hand wrought, nails are square and hand made. The finish is quite good and the black paint is worn on this English or American antique, which only opens with the forged key.
Size is 17" wide, 14" deep and 8" tall.
