An 1850's version of a laptop, this genuine rosewood lap or travel desk from England is inlaid with brass. This traditional artistic marquetry is called "Boulle" work.
The original finish is remarkably well preserved. Waxed and polished, only an occasional wipe with a soft dry cloth is needed to maintain its antique patina. There are shrinkage separations and warps, so this desk lid does not close completely and it doesn't quite sit flat when opened, see photos. There are also raised points of brass, typical on these pieces.
The writing surface inside is leather, underneath are storage compartments. Compartments were meant to hold inkwells, pens and points. In the base is a drawer with solid mahogany sides and hand cut dovetail joints. Original inset brass handles fold flat on this lovely antique.
Measurements when closed are 18" long, 10" wide and 6" tall, when opened to use, size is 18" x 20," slanting from 2 1/2" to 4 1/2" high.
