Vernis Martin Hand Painted Secretary Desk

This charming antique secretary desk is handpainted, with a "Vernis Martin" finish of translucent gold dust. The historic "frosted" finish technique was developed in the 1700's, and is skillfully applied over delicate hand painting.

Bronze mounts are richly detailed, and inside are tiny drawers and compartments, plus a sliding door underneath.

The finish is original, there is wear and some touchup, especially on the top - see photos. There are also minor shrinkage separations at the joints that are old and stable.

Graceful with understated artistry, this is rare antique furniture dating from about 1900.

Measurements are 31" wide, 19" deep, 36" tall and the writing surface is 29" above the floor. WEBO
