Victorian 52" Oval Shadow Box, Hair Wreath

This Victorian era shadowbox houses a traditional hair wreath, a hand crafted memento of locks of hair, delicately worked into an arrangement. In the 1860's, locks of hair from family and loved ones were sentimental keepsakes, kept in lockets and "wreaths" like this.

The massive oval frame has an old gold finish in very good condition, there are some shrinkage separations, see photos. A charming example of nostalgic handicraft work, this American antique is lined in white silk and has old wavy glass. Measurements are 52" tall, 41" wide and 6" deep.
