Walnut burl with brass corner mounts, this Victorian lap desk or traveling writing box was the "laptop" of its day in the 1870's.
Original and unrestored, the walnut burl has a fine finish with just enough wear and a golden patina, the gold-embossed blue leather inside has been reglued in the center - see photos.
Underneath are compartments for stationary, and there is a tilting pen holder next to compartments for inkwells. Unfortunately, the lid for the secret compartment underneath is missing, although the unlocking mechanism is still visible.
Charmingly worn, this was the perfect travel accessory in a bygone leisurely age. Size is 14" x 19" and 4" tall when opened, closed the box is 14" x 9" and 6" tall.
This piece can be shipped with insurance, Priority Mail within the Continental US for $30.00.
