Victorian Carved 1875 Antique Walnut Davenport or Ship Captain Secretary Desk

A sweet little Victorian 1870's secretary like this was called a Davenport after its inventor and also a "ship captain's desk" because it was a compact and efficient design in tight quarters on board. There is a small "secret" drawer, opened from underneath.

Hand carved of solid walnut with burl panels, the finish is in very fine condition, preserving lots of stains, mars and shrinkage separations from age for antique character. Left drawer fronts are false for balance, the drawers on the right have hand carved pulls as well.

The lift lid has gold tooled leather, inside are ink stains plus tiny compartments and cubicles for papers. Drawers have hand cut dovetail joints on this American made antique furniture. A filigree gallery is also a bookshelf.

Size is 26" wide, 24" deep, 35" tall and the desk top slopes up from 28" high at the front.
