A set of four Victorian Renaissance dining, parlor or game chairs from the 1870's with "Jenny Lind" sculptures is often attributed to John Jeliff, but there is no signature, so nothing is certain.
Solid walnut with burl panels, this American made antique furniture is tight and strong, reglued to serve another generation. The finish is in excellent condition with typical irregularities in the burl, see photos.
Upholstery is new and seats are soft but supportive.
Singer Jenny Lind, known as the "Swedish Nightingale," was a sensation, and her famous face adorns the cameos in the backs. Jeliff (1813-1893) worked in Newark, NJ, and was one of the great designers and makers of his day.
Chairs are 21" wide, 23" deep, 38" tall and seats are 17" high.
