Painted in oil on canvas about 1860 during the Victorian period, a portrait of a gentleman has its original hand-carved solid walnut frame.
Unsigned, the thoughtful subject has warm tones against a dark ground. There are repairs to the back of the canvas plus touch-ups at the bottom of the painting. The finish on the frame is original as well, in very fine condition with just enough antique patina.
Said to be from Ohio, the name of the subject and artist are both unknown - this would be ideal for someone who needs a distinguished ancestor.
Overall size of this historic work of art is 28" wide, 33" tall and 2 1/2" deep.
