A spectacular secretary desk with a lift and slide front dates from about 1880, during the late Victorian or Eastlake period.
Solid walnut with incised carving and burl panels, the satiny finish is in excellent condition with especially warm antique patina. Brass pulls are original on deep drawers with "pin and cove" dovetails, characteristic of the period.
Bottom right and left are file drawers. Leather with 24k gold tooling is new on the writing surface and both pull out shelves. Inside are tiny cubicles for papers and pen trays. There are losses to the bottom lip of the lift lid, see photos, and the lock is missing.
Panels are hand carved in high relief and show masterful artistry on this American made furniture. Panels all around have geometric fluting.
Measurements of this imposing and functional desk are 56" wide, 38" deep, 49 1/2" tall, the writing surface is 30" high and the kneehole is 22" wide and 27" high.
