Signed "Colonial" of Zeeland, Michigan, this tall or long case "grandfather" clock dates from around 1920, and plays the familiar Wesminster chime tune on tubular chimes each quarter hour.
The solid mahogany case is American made and all original, the finish is very well preserved with warm patina, and "crazing" or fine crackling for antique character.
Three lower panes are beveled on this historic clock, the "hood" or upper cabinet is removable. Feet are carved lion paws, fluted columns are stately. The brass movement is signed "Made in Germany" on the back and runs one week on a winding and keeps time accurately.
It plays the Westminster melody on deep resonant chimes, one bar of the tune on the quarter, two bars on the half, three on the three-quarters, and counts the hour on the hour. The lunar dial is hand painted, the solid brass dial is richly engraved with raised numerals.
This clock needs to be "set up" when delivered - weights and pendulum attached and the case leveled. Most of our customers can do this as we walk them through the fairly simple steps by phone. The process is not very difficult, and it is also nice to know how to do this again whenever the clock needs to be moved for cleaning, painting or whatever. A few customers prefer to hire a local clockmaker at their own expense to make a house-call and set up the clock, which is usually not very expensive, depending on your location.
Measurements are 25" wide, 17" deep and 7' 1" tall to the tip of the finial in the pediment.
