This 1830's chest actually contains a hidden secret pull out "butler's" desk, traditionally used by the butler or chief executive officer of a "Downton Abbey" type manor house, who hired and fired the staff and did the accounts. The writing surface is 31" high when opened.
Hand crafted of solid cherry with inlaid flame mahogany, the restored finish is in excellent condition. There are shrinkage separations from age, see photos. This exquisite handcrafted antique furniture is American made, drawers have hand cut dovetail joints and chamfered bottoms.
The top "drawer" has brass push buttons to drop the front. Inside is a leather desk top plus tiny cubicles and drawers for papers and a tiny pen drawer. There is a key only for one small drawer for valuables. Pulls are antique but not original.
Overall dimensions are 43" wide, 20" deep and 44" tall.
