Made by the balance maker Joseph Beranger in Lyons, France, a Victorian period balance scale from about 1870 is mahogany and brass with inlay.
An engraved brass mount reads "Usines de la Mulatiere, A Maison Beranger" and "Lyons." Beranger was known for the improvements he made to the Roberval Balance. The balance can hold up to 50 kilograms and is stamped "Portee 50 Kil."
The top is metal, hand painted to look like marble. The trays are brass, and the scale is in working condition.
Size is 29 1/2" wide, 12 1/2" deep and 10" tall.
