German Antique 1697 Farmhouse Iron Bound Dowry Chest, Trunk #51929

Crafted for the dowry chest or trunk of a wealthy family, this historic chest is signed "Anno (Latin for year) 1697" on the giant iron lock, and has a secret compartment inside.

• Antique furniture inscribed with hand painted German name from a later generation, "Joh (German for Johann or John) von (indicating aristocratic family) Neralt (?), 1852"
• Hand carved of solid pine with loads of wear, losses and shrinkage separations over the centuries
• Original patinated wrought iron hardware with hand engraved motifs
• Original iron handles to carry the chest to a brides new home, filled with her dowry of linens, silver etc
• Old worn finish has been cleaned and preserved with a coat of clear finish
• Very rustic with mars, losses & shrinkage separations from age - see photos
• No key for giant lock, which was disabled
• Covered compartment inside for small items with a panel revealing a secret compartment underneath

Size is 46.5" wide, 22.5" deep and 21.5" tall.
