An Art Deco period bronze sculpture of an Olympic javelin thrower is signed by noted artist, "A. Pohl" and dated 1927. Adolf Josef Pohl, 1872-1938, was a prominent Austrian sculptor, whose works are in numerous museums, and have been sold by the Dorotheum in Vienna and Sotheby's in London.
This bold statue has wonderful dark patina, capturing an athlete the second before he releases his javelin. There is a presentation inscription engraved into the base, "1927 Zsabylo PKP Warszawa," or Warszaw, Poland. There is a dent at one corner of the bronze base, and the javelin has been repaired.
Height of this historic artwork is 20 1/2", it is 5 1/2" deep and 11 1/2" wide.
